ARMI welcomes future leaders in regenerative medicine

Australia’s only dedicated regenerative medicine research institute has welcomed six new honours students this month, bringing its current cohort to 10. The students are pursuing projects across Alzheimer’s disease, skeletal muscle repair, blood cell development and craniofacial development, supervised by seven of ARMI’s research leaders.

Dr Jan Manent, who coordinates ARMI’s honours program, said the Institute’s regenerative medicine focus was a key advantage for students. “Unlike a broad research university department, every supervisor here works within regenerative medicine. Students aren’t adjacent to the field, they’re at the centre of it from day one,” he said.  

“Honours students at ARMI work alongside postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates and group leaders who are all pursuing important scientific questions. That density of expertise, and the willingness to share it, shapes how students learn to think about their own research.”  

Dr Manent also highlighted the Institute’s size and culture as qualities that set it apart. “ARMI is a smaller institute, which means students are known, not just as enrolments, but as colleagues and researchers. That creates a strong, supportive community feeling.”  

That sense of connection is reinforced by the Institute’s multicultural makeup. ARMI’s staff and students come from more than 20 countries, and the Institute marks that diversity through multicultural celebrations throughout the year.   

With supervisors drawn from across ARMI’s research groups, honours students have access to world-class infrastructure and expertise that would be difficult to find concentrated in one place elsewhere in Australia – including  AquaCore, one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest aquatic preclinical research facilities.  

Gila Bloch is investigating ageing and the PCDHG gene family for her Honours project.
Amanda Marasco’s Honours project will recreate the effects of ageing in human brain cells to better understand how Alzheimer’s disease develops.
