The Fellows awards have been established by Monash University in the lead-up to its 70th anniversary. They recognise exceptional academic staff whose achievements have helped shape the university’s global reputation through excellence in research, education, enterprise and commercialisation.

Following a faculty-led nomination process, Dr Roman was selected as part of a distinguished cohort of academics appointed to serve a three-year term as Monash 70th Anniversary Fellows. The appointments recognise excellence across all disciplines and areas critical to advancing the university’s purpose and impact.

Dr Roman’s research investigates how communication between muscle cells is altered during exercise, muscle diseases and ageing. This work has application in treating muscle disease and slowing age-related mobility decline.

“It is a privilege to be named a Monash 70th Anniversary Fellow,” Dr Roman said. “This recognition reflects not only my work, but also the collaborative efforts of colleagues, students and partners who contribute to advancing regenerative medicine research.”

ARMI’s Director of Research, Professor Peter Currie, congratulated Dr Roman on the achievement, highlighting the significance of the recognition.

“William’s appointment as a Monash 70th Anniversary Fellow is testament to the excellence of his research at ARMI in understanding tissue regeneration and repair. It is also an important acknowledgment of how much the university community values this contribution and the hopes they have that his findings will create effective medicines in the future.”

Dr Roman’s Fellowship complements his appointment in 2023 as the European Molecular Biology Laboratory Australia, Thomas Baker Foundation Group Leader and further reinforces ARMI’s reputation as a world-leading regenerative medicine research institute.
